Natural Solutions

Homeopathy is a buzzword often used to describe an effort to heal with natural sources, such as herbs and vitamins.

For example, Xylitol, a natural sugar is reported to have benefits for patients in preventing tooth decay. Please review the article in our newsletter. The newsletter is posted on our website.

Allergic to a dental material? Dr. Cottrill can help you learn what dental materials you may be allergic to.

Concerned about sterility and sanitation in dental offices? OSHA has requirements for dentistry and the care of patients. Dr. LuBovich's teammates follow the standards of sanitation and sterilization that OSHA requires. We do this in our patients' best interests, and ours.

Have you heard that mercury in dental fillings can be dangerous to your health? OSHA has strict rules in the handling of mercury. Mercury is more toxic than arsenic. Dr. Cottrill's office uses alternative filling materials that are biocompatible and not dangerous to our patients' health. Read more about mercury fillings in the newsletter posted on our website.

Concerned about the quality of water in dental units? Dr. Cottrill's office has a computerized water treatment system that sanitizes the water. Our water tastes better, and all of the chlorine is removed. If you smell tap water from Nashville's water supply, you might pull back your nose quickly from the foul smell. Our dental office water has no aroma, it is wonderfully clean!
Our Practice Philosophy

Our practice philosophy, and concept of patient care follows the Golden Rule Plus One. We believe that one should "do unto others as we would like to be treated." However, there is another golden rule, and we call it the golden rule plus one. This means: "Do unto others as they would like to be treated."

All of our patients are individual and unique. God made 500 million different people and no two are exactly the same. Each of our patients are unique and we style our care for patients how they want to be treated, not how we would want to be treated.

This concept is particularly true for beauty. Margaret Hupperfield, a 17th century artist said: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." This is another example of the uniqueness in our patients. Some patients chose to have space between their front teeth, and others chose to have spaces closed. Most often a patient will want a space between the two upper front teeth closed. This is an example of "Beauty being in the eye of the beholder." Another difference between patients relates to their physical health. One or other patients need medications before dental treatment, and some need shots of antibiotics prior to dental care. This is an example of a specific need that a unique patient needs, and other patients do not need. Some patients have anxiety and fear of dental treatment. For these unique patients, we provide anti-anxiety medications for their comfort in dental treatment.
Are You Concerned About Being Allergic To Dental Materials?

There are presently sophisticated software computer programs that can test dental materials. These tests are leading edge systems, and offer patients an opportunity to easily be tested for allergies. We offer different materials for those patients that wish to consider having alternatives to metals, and choose other restorative materials. We work with computer biotest professionals to determine what may work best for that special patient.

Another method of testing a dental material is by blood testing. When a patient is allergic to a material, the blood test turns cloudy.

If you are having a physician test dental materials, make sure they are pertinent to your alternatives for that particular dental restoration(s). Many times, we find that if a patient uses a standard dental materials test, tests will be performed on materials no longer used in dentistry nor is there a material that could be used for that patient’s individual restoration.
Have You Heard About Dental Water?

20/20's television show presented the poor quality of many dental offices' dental water. Our office has always had water purification systems. We are proud to presently have a computerized sanitation process that cleans our office supply water, as it enters the building. The computer operated system removes chemicals from the water such as Chlorine. There is more Chlorine in many citie's water supplies than in most swimming pools. At that content of Chlorine, water is not healthy to drink. Our system also removes Fluoride from the water. Fluoride may be good to help children in their decay prevention; however, it is also a poison, and we need not have it in our dental office water system. The water purification system also removes sediment and other particles from our water system. Our purification system is installed at the entrance of city water to our building, so all of our water is cleaned and purified for our use.
We Follow Standards For Sterilization

All of our oral instruments are cleaned and sterilized according to OSHA's requirements for cleanliness and sterilization. We biotest our sterilizing systems regularly to make sure all of our instruments are sterile. Biotesting is an analytical accurate method of determining if a sterilizing machine is performing to the standards that will kill all bacteria. We also train our Teammates to use the additional methods of testing to verify appropriate sterilization has occurred for our instruments.

OSHA has standards for dental office sterilzation and sanitation. We glady follow those recommendations for our patients' best interests, and ours.
Say No To Silver Mercury Fillings

Dental silver fillings are composed of silver and mercury. Mercury has long been known as a poison. It is more poisonous than arsenic.

Dr. Cottrill is a non-mercury dentist. For many years now, Dr. Cottrill has refrained from placing silver-mercury fillings. We have alternatives for silver-mercury fillings. Those alternatives are called composite fillings. Composite fillings are white in color, and new composites are hard and wear resistant.

Many patients have been referred to Dr. Cottrill for the removal of their mercury containing fillings. During the removal of silver-mercury fillings, we administer oxygen to patients, use a protective barrier, and use high volume suction to pick up all of the filling as it is ground out.

One of patients, the old owner of the practice, described a situation where, when he was 18 years old, had 20 silver-mercury fillings placed. Two weeks later, he developed diabetes. It is likely that all of the mercury contacted at that time poisoned his pancreas, causing him to become a diabetic.

Mercury has been suggested to be a cause of many different diseases. Many patients are requesting their mercury fillings be removed because of this fear. The American Dental Association has found no research that demonstrates any direct cause-effect relating mercury to cause diseases. Therefore, the ADA continues to suggest that silver with mercury fillings are safe for patient use. Dr. Cottrill does not dispute that there is no research to show that mercury causes different diseases. Dr. Cottrill simply does not want to take that chance, and introduce a substance that is a known poison into a patient’s mouth and teeth.
