Mouthguard Q&A
What is a mouthguard?
A mouthguard is a special covering that fits over the teeth to protect them from harm. While there are several types of mouthguards, Dr. Cottrill usually provides a custom-fitted mouthguard to offer the patient the best protection. Typically, they usually cover only the upper teeth unless the patient has braces or other mouth appliances.
A custom-fitted mouth protector is fabricated by Dr. Cottrill after taking an impression of the patient’s teeth. This impression is then sent away to a laboratory to create a personalized mouthguard that is comfortable, resistant to tearing, and not restrictive for breathing or speaking.
Why might I need a mouthguard?
Mouthguards can be used by anyone who plays contact sports where there is a risk of injury to the mouth or tooth trauma. The cushioning of the mouthguard helps protect the teeth and tongue when the head is jarred or a person bites down reactively.
Additionally, many people grind their teeth while they sleep. Teeth grinding can cause a plethora of symptoms, including headaches, jaw pain, and tooth damage. The mouthguard protects the surface of the teeth and helps prevent some of these harmful symptoms.
How do you care for a mouthguard?
A mouthguard should be treated like any other dental appliance. After each wear, patients should rinse it with cold water and scrub it with a toothbrush and mild soap. If the mouthguard has lingering stains, patients can soak it in a mouthwash to help loosen debris.
When storing the mouthguard, patients should place it in a container with perforations to allow air flow and circulation. Always keep the mouthguard away from heat, as it can distort its shape. Patients should bring their mouthguards to any dental appointment to have them examined and make sure it still fits.
